Just back from FlintHi,
Just got back from Flint, Michigan - one of the most meaningful trips of my life. It was such an honor to work with the NAACP, Sierra Club, SEIU, and other Flint community leaders to tell the story of what needs to happen now forFlint - as well as what can be done in the short-term to prevent future "Flints" across the country. It's been an exciting month - and I have included some of the highlights for you below. Hope everything is going well! Holly |
SIERRA CLUB
CNN Op-ed by Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune & NAACP President Cornell William Brooks: Flint is Just the Tip of the Iceberg
The world stared in disbelief recently at the news that an American city of nearly 100,000 was needlessly exposed to toxic levels of lead in the city's water system. In Flint, Michigan, thousands of families fear for their health and their children's future. And as the full story has emerged, disbelief has turned to outrage, turning Flint into a political issue big enough to attract a presidential debate.
But what will happen once the television cameras and the presidential candidates leave Flint? Will there be meaningful change to ensure this never happens again? That depends on whether the root causes of this disaster are addressed.

PROGRESSIVE CHANGE CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE
Washington Post: Liberal activists to bring SCOTUS fight to Mitch McConnell's doorstep
The groups promising to deliver the petitions to McConnell’s Louisville office include the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, MoveOn.org Civic Action, Color of Change and several other organizations that are pressing Senate Republicans to fill the vacancy created by Associate Justice Antonin Scalia’s death Saturday at 79. The delivery of the petitions is one of the most dramatic gestures yet from activists on both sides of the political divide who have mobilized to feverish levels in recent days, citing the sky-high stakes of a nomination battle.
“Grassroots pressure will be the key to winning this fight,” said Adam Green, the PCCC’s co-founder, in a conference call with reporters Wednesday in which he cited “nearly unprecedented grassroots energy and public outcry” over Republican plans to block an Obama nomination.
STROOCK & STROOCK & LAVAN LLP
Reuters: The Washington insiders who work to get Chinese deals approved
Among the former officials who use their CFIUS experience in advisory work are Anne Salladin, who reviewed some 500 deals that went to CFIUS during her 20 years at the Treasury. Her role at law firm Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP has included advising a Chinese private equity firm on the acquisition of some semiconductor-related assets.
NEW HAMPSHIRE DEMOCRATIC PARTY
WMUR on the Trump/Sununu ticket
Buckley told reporters Wednesday that as Trump heads toward the Republican presidential nomination, Kelly Ayotte and Republican candidate for governor Chris Sununu are headed for disaster.
“Establishment Republicans are lining up to denounce Trump, including Chris Sununu’s own father (former Gov. John H. Sununu),” Buckley said. “But Ayotte and Sununu have remained silent. It’s clear they are willing to hitch their wagons to a candidate running on fear, anger and hatred.”
Buckley said Ayotte and Sununu “aren’t that different” than Trump. All three want to defund Planned Parenthood and end Medicaid expansion, he said, and while Trump has called climate change a hoax, Sununu has opposed funding for renewable energy, while Ayotte has supported continued tax subsidies for the oil industry, he said.
